The Ending of Evil Dead Rise brilliantly reimagines the bloody violence that has become synonymous with the franchise. However, the final scenes of the Evil Dead reboot are also steeped in emotional depth, transforming the supernatural horror film into a meditation on parenthood. Taking place over the course of a single night, Evil Dead Rise shifts the series' focus from remote forest cabins to an aging Los Angeles apartment complex. The story follows estranged sisters Beth and Ellie, who are reunited only to be interrupted by the Necronomicon, also known as the Book of the Dead, a well-known element of The Evil Dead mythology. The book's curse unleashes a horde of demonic possessions that threaten the safety of the sisters' family.

Despite the positive reviews received by the 2013 remake of Sam Raimi's original "The Evil Dead," "Evil Dead Rise" has revitalized the franchise with its new, claustrophobic settings and morally conflicted characters. In addition to its awe-inspiring hyper-violence and innovative jump scares, "Evil Dead Rise" has also been praised for Lee Corin's writing and directing efforts, as well as the performances of Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland. While the 1981 original "The Evil Dead" is largely considered a cult classic, it also had drawbacks, such as its treatment of female characters. However, "Evil Dead Rise" pays homage to the original films with Easter eggs and hidden details while also highlighting stronger female leads.

The survivors of Evil Dead Rise: Kassie and Beth

Despite the valiant efforts of Danny and Bridget, the only survivors of the harrowing events of Evil Dead Rise were Kassie, Ellie's daughter, and her aunt Beth. The film's conclusion features a visually stunning reference to The Shining as Beth and Kassie flee their floor via an elevator flooded with blood. Despite the deluge of blood, the aunt and niece manage to escape the elevator and make it to the parking lot. Unfortunately, Kassie, who is naive and agile, is abducted by the final Deadite and almost killed with a chainsaw. However, Beth comes to her rescue, using a chainsaw to defeat the Deadite and save Kassie's life.

Beth started off as a regular guitar technician, but when Ellie became possessed, her life took a dangerous turn. She had to use anything she could get her hands on, whether it was a pair of scissors or a chainsaw, to fight off the Deadites. Despite being caught in the end, Kassie had also demonstrated her ability to be violent, as seen when she impaled a possessed Bridget. Survival was not just physical, but also required mental toughness, as Beth was constantly belittled by Ellie's judgmental behavior, and Kassie mistakenly believed her mother was still alive.

How did Ellie manipulate her sister, Beth, in Evil Dead Rise?

After Ellie transformed into a Deadite, pandemonium broke out in her residential building, as the Necronomicon predicted the emergence of many more Deadites. One of them was the hybrid form that Beth faced in the conclusion of Evil Dead Rise. Ellie, her children Danny and Bridget, as well as her neighbors Gabriel and Mr. Fonda, fused into a single Deadite. As a result, Beth had to rescue Ellie's only surviving and youngest daughter, Kassie, from the clutches of this multi-armed monstrosity. Beth, like the original Evil Dead protagonist Ash Williams, employed a chainsaw to compel the Deadite into a wood chipper. Even after seemingly killing the Deadite, Ellie's head fell out.

In Evil Dead Rise, the character Ellie, who is possessed by Deadite, has a habit of exploiting the fears of others and bringing them down. Despite this, she still tries to tap into the professional and personal insecurities of her sister, Beth. However, Beth manages to overcome her fear and accept the fact that her sister is dead. She ultimately takes action by kicking Ellie's head back into the chipper.

Unfortunately, things are not looking up for the characters as the story progresses into the next day. It is revealed that another tenant in the building, Jessica, is now possessed by the Deadites. The statement refers to the initial, shocking sequence of events depicted in the film, where Jessica, who is possessed, brutally murders both her sister and boyfriend. The characters are once again faced with a horrifying situation as they try to survive the possession and violence brought on by the Deadites.

How does the ending of Evil Dead Rise address the theme of parenthood?

The Ending of Evil Dead Rise provides a fitting resolution to the story of parenthood portrayed in the film. One of the characters, Ellie, is portrayed as a mother of three children who, despite struggling financially as a tattoo artist, does everything she can to provide for her family. Meanwhile, another character named Beth has recently discovered that she is pregnant and seeks advice from Ellie regarding her future as a parent. Due to her unstable professional life and emotional baggage, Beth is apprehensive about becoming a mother. However, after Ellie transforms into a Deadite, Beth shows that she too can be a devoted and protective caregiver, just like her older sister.

Beth demonstrated her unwavering determination to protect her family members from the threat of the Deadites, even at the cost of her own life. Despite the deaths of Danny and Bridget, she refused to give up and fought relentlessly to save them from being infected. In the face of the final Deadite's attack on Kassie, Beth could have easily escaped to safety, but instead she chose to confront the grotesque entity head-on, revealing her true nature as a strong and reliable parental figure.

Even before the final battle, Beth had already shown her concern for the safety of Kassie, who was the youngest member of the family. She made every effort to keep her hidden and protected. The fact that Beth was able to rise to the challenge and face her fears as a mother figure is a testament to her courage and selflessness.

In the end, Kassie acknowledged Beth's maternal qualities, remarking that she would make a great mother. This was a full circle moment for Beth, who had initially feared becoming a mother but was now validated by her own niece. Her actions and sacrifices demonstrated that she was not only a capable parental figure but also a loving and devoted family member who would go to great lengths to protect those she cared about.

What possibilities are there for future sequels and spin-offs of Evil Dead Rise?

The Ending of Evil Dead Rise leaves the door wide open for many more potential sequels and spin-offs, as the Deadites remain a constant threat. The Necronomicon, which previously caused chaos at Ellie's apartment complex, has now moved on to Jessica's forest retreat. The Deadites seem to be spreading like a viral infection and must be contained in future installments.

Bruce Campbell makes a subtle voice cameo in Evil Dead Rise, fueling speculation that he may reprise his role as Ash in future sequels. Beth's character, with her blood-stained face and skill with a chainsaw, echoes the iconic image of Ash, suggesting she may take on a leading role in the franchise and become an equally beloved figure.

Evil Dead Rise, a horror film, was embraced by fans of the genre just like the original Evil Dead movies, despite its terrifying and violent content. New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, the producers and distributors, respectively, of Evil Dead Rise, had a financial triumph, and the movie can potentially launch its own horror franchise, similar to the Conjuring Universe created by the two companies. The previous films' mythology indicates that there may be several additional copies of the Necronomicon, the evil book featured in the movies, scattered across the globe. If these books are discovered, sequels to Evil Dead Rise may delve into more perilous situations, such as the possession of Jessica, the main character in Evil Dead Rise.
